I was born on 5 Nov 1937 in Bradford, W.Yorkshire and educated at the
Bradford Grammar School. I studied physics at King's College London, graduating
with a B.Sc. in 1958. This was followed by two years' Alternative National
Service in nursing as a 'conscientious objector'. I embarked on a theological
degree at the London Bible College in 1960, but after two years decided that I
could no longer accept their conservative approach to the bible, and transferred
to New College, London where I spent a further two years in preparation for the
Congregational ministry. I graduated with a B.D. from London University in 1963,
obtaining the 'Hywel Hughes New Testament Proficiency Prize' from New College. I
was ordained as a Congregational minister at Barnard Castle, County Durham in
1964, but resigned a year later because of some doubts concerning theology. I
joined Rolls-Royce in Derby where I worked in computing for 28 years, latterly
attaining the post of Engineering Database Manager. In the 1970s I resumed an
interest in the New Testament, especially the formation of its documents and the
history behind them. I took early retirement in 1994, partly to have more time
for my New Testament studies. I am married with two grown-up children.
