Making Sense

Pillar figurine 2501

See the definitions of religion in Schmidt (1988:10-16). Dever (1983:580) defines religion as functioning "in the adaptation of an ancient society to its natural and cultural environment", opposite to the way modern studies depict how religion works. Religion "interprets" the natural and the cultural world, so that they make sense within the system defined by the religion.
